Hi all,

There is a Beaver group in England that has reached out to us as they work towards their Friendship Badge (we don’t have badges in Beavers in Canada).  They have shared some information with us about Beavers in England and we will prepare something on Monday to send back.

I have attached the information they shared.  We will read it  / share it with the children on Monday night as well as learn about England & the UK.

I have chosen a few photos to share with the Beavers in England from the various activities we have done this year, however, I would love to include different ones.

If you have any photos and / or video and you are willing to share, can you send them along to me?  If you have a lot, I will give you access to my google drive and you can upload them there, just let me know.  If you could share before Sunday so I have time to have prints done, that would be ideal.

Please do not forget indoor shoes!! No outside boots or shoes in the gym please.

Also, this is the last call for Ottawa 67’s tickets. Cost is $11.30 each and game day is January 19. Payment must be remitted by Monday, December 9.

See you all on Monday!!

Hi all,

We have had two more children show an interest in becoming beavers and one or both may join us tonight bringing our "required" numbers to 17 people. This means that we have room for only 8 additional "guests".

For those of you who have emailed me, I understand and I will do my best to accommodate everyone but in the end this may not be possible.

If you cannot make it tonight, please email / text / call me at any time so that we can accommodate additional parents should the need arise.

Don't forget our start time is 630pm at the Firestation on Teron Road.

Many thanks to everyone for your understanding.

BEAVERS: November 25 Session

posted Nov 25, 2013, 12:15 PM by Louise Foley   [ updated Nov 25, 2013, 12:15 PM ]

Hi all,

A reminder that on Monday, we will be going on a tour of Fire Station #42 on
Teron Road at Beaverbrook.  The tour starts at 6:30pm, so if you could
arrive a few minutes before that would be ideal.  We will meet at the
station. Please do not park in front of the station doors.

While parents are welcome to attend and accompany the Beavers on the tour,
the total number of participants is 25.  We have 12 Beavers and 3 leaders,
which leaves 10 available spots for visitors. Should we find ourselves with
too many parents, I will ask for volunteers to stay behind or failing that,
decide based on first come first served. I hope you all understand as these
are the Fire Station rules, not Scouts Canada rules.

If you will be unable to attend, please advise me via email or call
(613-795-3396) even right up to the meeting (I will monitor my iPhone) as it
may be the difference between someone being able to attend or not.

No dues will be collected this week.

Yours in Scouting,

Hi all,

This year’s annual Scouts Day with the Ottawa 67s will be held on January 19th at 2:00 PM.  Tickets are $11.30 and additional tickets for friends and family can be purchased at the same rate.

Donations of non-perishable food items will also be accepted on behalf of the Ottawa Food Bank so we encourage all of you to let your friends and family know about i

We will be purchasing the tickets for Lynx Pack and "A" Colony at the same time so that we can all sit together. If you’re interested in attending, please let me know how many tickets you want and bring a cheque (made out to “1st Kanata A Colony Beavers”) for the number of tickets you would like no later than Monday, December 9.

BEAVERS: November 18 Session

posted Nov 17, 2013, 11:52 AM by Louise Foley   [ updated Nov 17, 2013, 11:52 AM ]

Hello all,

Tomorrow we will be trying out a new Scouting science themed night.  1st Kanata Beavers were chosen to pilot the Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) program being developed by Scouts with funds received from Imperial Oil foundation & ExxonMobil Canada (http://www.scouts.ca/ca/news/scouts-canada-partner-imperial-oil-foundation-and-exxonmobil-canada-help-develop-canada%E2%80%99s-futur). We will be meeting at our usual time of 6pm at Stephen Leacock Public School.

We will be learning about the science of sound. The session is titled “Sound of an Orchestra”.  At the end, we will try and ask the Beavers some review questions about the session  such as “what did they like” and “what did they not like” about the session. As part of the pilot we need to provide feedback on the sessions to Scouts Canada.  If after the session, your child provides feedback to you, like in the car on the way home (I know Connor does this often!!), feel free to drop me an email or a quick call. The leaders of course will be providing feedback as well. All input, including yours is welcome.

Finally, we will be doing closing a little early as I have a few items that need to be handed out.

  • Indoor shoes need to be in the gym; please bring an extra pair of appropriate footwear;
  • At the end of the evening, children will not be allowed to leave the gym until a parent is present.  This means a leader needs to SEE the parent.  Please come into the gym to pick up your child.
Looking forward to a fun-filled science evening!!

Upcoming events:
November 25: Tour of Teron road Fire Station NOTE: Start time is 6:30pm;
December 2: Learning about Beavers in other countries (see “A” Colony web site for details)
December 9: STEM Module Magnets
December 16: Christmas Party (last session until Jan 6)

Hi all,

On Monday, both "A" & "B" Colonies will be meeting at Stephen Leacock Public
School to celebrate Remembrance Day.  Joining us will be Lieutenant Colonel
Pete JW Saunders of the Canadian Air Force (and his daughter Rebecca) to
discuss the significance of Remembrance Day.  If time permits, we will also
be doing a poppy craft, parent helpers are welcome.

We will be starting at the usual time of 6pm.

Bio of Lieutenant Colonel Pete JW Saunders
LCol Saunders enrolled in the Canadian Forces in March 1990. He has worked
in the Sea King Helicopter community on both the east and west coasts of
Canada. LCol Saunders has served in Afghanistan, the NATO exercise Operation
Active Endeavour and in Bahrain. He currently serves as the Career Manager
for the entire Canadian Air Force. He holds a Bachelor's and two Masters
degrees and has won awards for his work at the Department of National
Defense. In his free time, LCol Saunders busies himself renovating his
century home (at which he is adept) creating gourmet meals (at which he is a
master) and trying to play lead guitar to a variety of AC-DC tunes (albeit
with a distressing lack of skill and success).

Beavers: November 4

posted Nov 3, 2013, 5:20 PM by Louise Foley   [ updated Nov 3, 2013, 5:20 PM ]

Hi all,

First, I want to thank Grace Lee (Remi’s Mom) for the yummy cookies and Janet Mallette (Zakk’s mom) for the chips! I think our Halloween was a lot of fun!

Tomorrow we are going to be cleaning Craig Park with the Lynx Cub Pack.  The cub pack will join us at 6:30pm, so instead of having part of our meeting indoors, we will meet at the school and walk to the park at our start time of 6pm. We will do a scavenger hunt and then when the cubs arrive, we will clean the park. Since it will be dark-ish, we're just doing a quick walk-around looking for litter.

Please dress for the weather and please bring a flashlight.

We will not be collecting dues for this meeting.

Next few meetings:

November 11: special guest: L.Col Peter Saunders
November 18: first module of STEM (http://bit.ly/ScoutStem )
November 25: tour of Teron Road Fire Station (NOTE: meeting will be from 6:30-7:30pm!!)

Don’t forget about our web site.  http://acolony.1stkanatascouts.org/

See you all tomorrow.

Hi all,

As you saw at our investiture ceremony, we have a new leader. Christina, aka Ringtail, aka Tony's Mom has successfully completed all the requirements to be a Beaver leader. So, starting on Monday, October 28 we will be returning to Stephen Leacock Public School.

For our first meeting on our own, we will be very relaxed and review our motto, law and promise. We'll do the opening and closing and basically play some games to get to know each other's names. We also have a Halloween craft planned.

This will be our Halloween party so the Beavers can come in costume. I'll bring a few treats as well. Let's have some FUN!!

If you would like to bring something, please contact me with the item so we can ensure we cover off all food allergies and dietary considerations.

If you would like to reach all the leaders at the same time you can use the email address:colonya.leaders@1stkanatascouts.org.

Members of the email list are:
Louise Foley
Amr Ellaithy
